By 1950, the
company was producing more than 150 Pow-R-Drivers per week, a device that
utilized a tractor-drive system to power hammermills, corn shellers and
irrigation pumps.
In 1956, Vermeer introduced the Pow-R-Sprinkler which distributed water
gently in large circles over crops. Soon, the company went international
as it introduced new product lines such as the Pow-R-Ditcher (trencher).
In 1957, while testing a new stump cutter prototype, an employee accidentally
hit the wrong lever causing the blade to move horizontally across the stump.
This mistake lead to the production of a top-of-the-line stump cutter design
that is still used throughout the industry today. During the same decade,
Vermeer Corporation began producing equipment for other companies such
as John Deere and Allis-Chalmers.
Gary had the vision to recreate age-old farming jobs in a new and better
way, and irrigation was his next project to tackle.
